Van Dyck Crystals
Van Dyck Crystals are a traditional and natural water based wood dye made from walnut husks. They produce a colour ranging from a very light brown to dark brown depending upon the concentration.
- Traditional method for colouring oak, mahogany and walnut
- Natural Dye made from walnut husks
- Intensity of colour is controlled by strength of dilution
Preparation Dissolve the crystals in hot water (about 100 g to 1 L). Test the colour on a spare piece of wood, darken by adding more crystals and lighten by adding more water. To obtain different shades Liberon Concentrate Water Based Dyes can also be added to the solution. Or the solution can be added to Liberon Palette Wood Dyes or Liberon water based varnishes.
Application Ensure the surface is bare, dry and free from dust. Apply with a brush or sponge and wipe of excess with a cloth. Allow to dry for at least 12 hours, then rub down lightly with abrasive paper 240 or 320 grit.
Important Always test product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for colour, compatibility and end result. Precautions When using a water based varnish over the stain extra care must be taken on application of the first coat as over brushing may lift out the colour. Tip : Soak required amount of crystals in the same volume of water overnight to create a gel. This then will dissolve in the required volume of water very quickly giving an instant wood stain.
